2006 Toyota Tundra Rear Differential Replacement

Replacing a Differential: A Step-by-Step Guide for Toyota Tundra Owners

Introduction

Replacing a differential is a serious undertaking, but it can be done with the right tools and know-how. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps of removing and replacing the differential on a 2006 Toyota Tundra.

Tools and Materials You'll Need

* Toyota Tundra Chilton manual * Floor jack and jack stands * Wrenches (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm) * Sockets (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm) * Ratchet * Torque wrench * Differential carrier * Differential fluid * Gasket maker

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Safety First

Before you start working on your Tundra, make sure it's parked on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged. Then, disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the Differential Cover

Locate the differential cover on the rear axle and remove the bolts that hold it in place. Carefully remove the cover and set it aside.

3. Remove the Differential Pinion Shaft

Using a 12mm wrench, remove the nut that holds the differential pinion shaft in place. Then, use a slide hammer to remove the pinion shaft.

4. Remove the Differential Carrier

Using a 19mm wrench, remove the bolts that hold the differential carrier in place. Then, carefully remove the carrier and set it aside.

5. Inspect the Differential Carrier

Inspect the differential carrier for any signs of damage or wear. If you find any damage, you will need to replace the carrier.

6. Install the New Differential Carrier

Apply a bead of gasket maker to the mating surface of the differential carrier. Then, carefully place the carrier back into the axle housing and tighten the bolts to 59 ft-lb.

7. Install the Differential Pinion Shaft

Apply a bead of gasket maker to the tip of the differential pinion shaft and slide it back into the axle housing. Then, tighten the nut to 25 ft-lb.

8. Install the Differential Cover

Apply a bead of gasket maker to the mating surface of the differential cover and place it back on the axle housing. Then, tighten the bolts to 12 ft-lb.

9. Fill the Differential with Fluid

Fill the differential with the appropriate type of fluid until it reaches the fill hole. Then, plug the fill hole and replace the negative battery terminal.

10. Test Drive Your Tundra

Once you have replaced the differential, take your Tundra for a test drive to make sure it is working properly.
