The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced a change to the name of its Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, which will now be known as the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award.

The move is in recognition of the legendary contributions of Bill Russell, who won 11 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics and is widely considered one of the greatest players in league history.

"Bill Russell's unparalleled success in the NBA Finals represents the highest level of achievement for any player," said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. The first Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award will be presented to the outstanding performer in this year's NBA Finals, which begin on June 2.
